Travel Stories
Thailand and Bangkok, by Joe Wagner. Part 2
Other highlights of our time up North were renting a motorcycle and riding
to the third holiest site in Thailand, Doi Suthep. It's on top of a mountain
about 16 km from the city, and has a stupa containing a relic of Shakyamuni
Buddha. It was suprizingly powerful, with mist blowing in and a mysterious
feeling in the air. Being Buddhist can be very excellent.
The best thing we did was ride the cycle across town to Huan Suntaree, a
restaurant owned by a famous Thai folk singer. We had a dinner of green
curry, pak pung phi dang (a green vegetable which is delicious), mixed
vegetables in some kind of sauce, and pad prik num, another great Thai dish
with a superhot, mouth dissolving sauce on the side. The food was terrific,
and Suntaree sang for a couple hours, which was totally enraputuring.
Fantastic. We even got her autograph. I can't discribe it more than that,
but suffice it to say she had an amazing high voice which was perfect for
the music.
We took the overnight train back here two nights ago, this time taking
John's advice and getting aircon. It was great, but my eye problem (corneal
erosion, look it up if you want to be grossed out) was back in full force
and woke me up twice. I ate a suprizingly great dinner of vegetables in
oyster sauce on the train (I know, not really vegetarian, but you do what
you can while travelling), and we got in at 6am. Now we're staying with John
until tomorrow, and hopefully won't be hiding in the bathroom at all this
time.
Tomorrow we leave for Kathmandu.
love,
joe and cindy
Somewhere having fun.
